Hey there, today I decided to revisit the book “Originals” by Adam Grant to see if I could find any inspiration for a new marketing blog post. And guess what? I found something interesting to share with you on page 37.
The Problem
Many people believe that if you want to do better work, you have to do less of it. But that’s not necessarily true. In fact, according to Grant, the idea of a tradeoff between quantity and quality is a myth.
Creators like Edison, Bach, and Picasso were constantly putting out new material and creating some truly memorable works. How many can you remember? Probably quite a few, but not enough to fill up your entire hand.
During my 15 years of helping companies with marketing programs, I’ve noticed that some marketing managers become obsessed with putting out “perfect” marketing materials. Now, there’s nothing wrong with striving for perfection, but some managers take it too far and end up producing very little over the course of a year.
The problem with this approach is that all that time and effort put into refining a message or creating the perfect image or video might not even work in the end. And if it doesn’t, you’ve wasted all that time and effort for nothing.
The Solution
The key is to strike a balance between quality and quantity. Of course, you want your marketing materials to be top-notch, but you also need to keep moving forward and putting new ideas out there. You never know which idea will resonate with your target audience and help you achieve your goals.
So my advice is to put effort into your marketing materials, but don’t get caught up in perfectionism. Keep putting new ideas out there and testing them in the marketplace. You might be surprised at the overall results you achieve compared to only putting out a few “perfect” things a year.
